CAPTAIN AMERICA VS WOLVERINE

CAPTAIN AMERICA VS WOLVERINE

THE DEFINITIVE WRITE UP ON THE BATTLE BETWEEN THE SUPER SOLDIER AND THE WEAPON X

By
John "THE MEGO STRETCH HULK" Cimino

When fanboys talk about the greatest hand-to-hand fighters in comics, there can be no doubt that Captain America and Wolverine will rank at the top of their lists. It's almost impossible for them not too, because when it comes down to pure overall skill-sets, these two are almost without equal and have become the standard to which all others are measured by. Captain America is the perfect human fighting machine, an unparalleled soldier and team leader who protects the innocent with an indestructible shield and an unwavering spirit. He is an idealist who stands side by side with the common man and fights for a better world in the face of tyranny. Wolverine is the greatest weapon Department H ever created, but he is also their biggest failure. It didn't matter how much manipulation and propaganda they used on him during the Weapon X program, this feral mutant could never be controlled or contained. But when they bonded an unbreakable Adamantium-alloy to his skeleton, granting him razor sharp claws, coupled with his mutant healing factor and bad temper, Wolverine is now one of the most dangerous beings on the planet. Both characters (when written at their best) are possibly the most complete high-end skilled fighters in comics.

Due to the Super-Soldier Serum, Captain America was transformed into the perfect human fighting machine. When it comes to pure hand-to-hand talent and finding a way to win, he is without equal.

With an unbreakable Adamantium-laced skeleton, razor sharp claws, a healing factor and a berserker rage, Wolverine is one of the most dangerous beings on the planet to fight straight up.

Beyond pure fighting skills, when you talk about Captain America and Wolverine you also have to talk about honor, tenacity and willpower. Let's face it, these guys may not be the most powerful heroes in the world, but they have more grit and determination inside them than just about anybody. They are both well known throughout the Marvel Universe for their sheer endurance and courage in the face of danger - even against the most powerful of opponents. They just don't know how to quit and they keep coming at their enemies no matter how hurt or overpowered they are. This is their greatest strength and why they have so much respect for each other and among their peers. They are above everything else - survivors. And they continue to inspire everyone on a level few others ever achieve. Their teammates and friends have no problem following them even through the most dire of circumstances and staying by their side until the end. Without a doubt, these guys are true superheroes in every sense of the word.

There is no doubt that Captain America has an unwavering belief system. It doesn't matter the odds or obstacles, he would never falter in the face of tyranny and this makes him an inspiration to all.

Wolverine was one of the first real "bad ass" superheroes to come on the scene. With a willingness to scrap against anyone at anytime (and usually without any reason), he is tremendously respected ... and feared.

There can be no doubt that "Captain America vs Wolverine" is such a fascinating match up. Both characters are very comparable in many aspects of their physical attributes and such elite-level fighters that it invokes immense intrigue among fanboys. Who is truly the better fighter? Who is more respected? Who is more inspiring? Who is more feared? What would happen if they ever faced off against each other? Which is the cooler weapon - Cap's Adamantium-Vibranium-Steel shield or Logan's Adamantium claws? Questions that are not easy to answer, no matter how hard their fans like to argue about it.

It seems that despite being such an interesting and demanded match up, you would think that these two would have clashed more often than their history dictates. But in reality, "Captain America vs Wolverine" is a rare occurrence in the annals of Marvel's history. I think it's because writers find it hard to come up with reasons to have them fight since they have been teammates for so long and are considered friends. Sure, they have different perspectives on life and moral codes, but they respect each other immensely and know that they can trust the other no matter what situation is at hand. Not to mention, they are both Marvel icons and the embodiment of their respected nations; America and Canada. No creator wants to truly disrespect either of them, so it has to be a daunting task.

But despite all that, fanboys are a fickle bunch that demand answers to their constant comic debates. And Marvel likes to play on that every now and then with products that keep the curiosity going strong in the mass media. Plus, with both characters in major motion pictures and more popular today all over the world than ever before, the intrigue and demand is at an all time high. Hell, I can't think of anyone who doesn't want to see the Super-Soldier and the Weapon X duke it out to prove who is the superior - I know I do!

"Captain America vs Wolverine" trading card (1990)

When it comes to having Captain America and Wolverine battling it out against each other or teaming up in fierce competition, nothing does it better than the Marvel vs Capcom fighting game series.

Marvel's Greatest Battles Comic Packs featuring "Captain America vs Wolverine" (2010)

All in all, "Captain America vs Wolverine" is a very interesting fight between two of the most revered heroes in the Marvel Universe. It's the ultimate clash involving the best of the best and that's why we comic fans will always love it!

Enough with the background, let's get to the combatants...

TALE OF THE TAPE

Name: Captain America

Height: 6' 2"

Weight: 240lbs

Real Name: Steven Rogers

Origins: New York, New York

Home Base: U.S.A.

Nicknames: Cap, The Sentinel of Liberty, The Super-Soldier, The Star-Spangled Avenger, Wing-head, The Nomad, The Living Legend, The Captain, Top Cop of America, Weapon I, Brett Hendrick, Buck Jones, Yeoman America, Expatriate, Crossbones, Nathan Hale, Anthony Schwarz, Roger Grant, Steven Grant Rogers, Roger Stevens, The Man Without a Country, The Brooklyn Project, Lord of the Frozen Ice, Commander Rogers, Spider-King, The Avenger, The First Avenger

Powers: Possesses no superhuman powers, although as a result of the Super-Soldier Serum, he was transformed into a "perfect" specimen of human development and conditioning. He is as strong, fast, agile, and durable as it is possible for a human being to be without being considered superhuman (although with maximum intensity he has been known to perform feats that have to be considered superhuman). With his peak-level metabolism his body eliminates the excessive build-up of fatigue-producing poisons in his muscles, granting him phenomenal speed and endurance. It also allows him to heal from injury or disease faster than normal. He is subject to all human vulnerabilities, although his immunity to diseases, toxins, or even alcohol poisoning is extraordinary. His senses and even mental performance have been greatly enhanced, allowing his mind to operate in the most efficient and rapid manner possible. He never forgets anything and has perfect recall which makes him a tactical genius with the ability to quickly process multiple information streams (e.g., threat assessment) and rapidly respond to changing tactical situations making him a unparalleled battlefield strategist and team leader. He is a master in all forms of fighting and acrobatics, developing many of his own unique styles known only to him, making him perhaps the most skilled and versatile hand-to-hand fighter in the Marvel Universe. He possesses an indomitable will and spirit granting him high resistance to psychic control and assaults. He is also an expert fighter, handler and marksman with his shield as well as being a skilled artist.

Paraphernalia: Shield; a concave disk about 2.5 feet in diameter, weighing 12 pounds, made of a unique unbreakable Adamantium-Vibranium-Steel alloy (that had never been duplicated) with hyperkinetic-senses. Uniform; a fire-retardant costume incorporated with Kevlar body armor as well as a chain-mail shirt composed of light-weight "duralumin." Utility Belt; usually containing mission-specific equipment.

Favorite Expressions: "Avengers Assemble!", "I'm loyal to nothing General...except the Dream.", "Doesn't matter what the press says. Doesn't matter what the politicians or the mobs say. Doesn't matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right. This nation was founded on one principle above all else: the requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or the consequences. When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth, and tell the whole world — No, you move!", "Captain America is not here to lead the country. I'm here to serve it. If I'm a captain, then I'm a soldier. Not of any military branch, but of the American people. Years ago, in simpler times, this suit and this shield were created as a symbol to help make America the land it's supposed to be... to help it realize its destiny. Ricocheting from super-villain duel to super-villain duel doesn't always serve that purpose. There's a difference between fighting against evil and fighting for the common good. I'm not always able to choose my battles... but effective immediately, I'm going to make an effort to choose the battles that matter. Battles against injustice, against cynicism, against intolerance. I will still serve with the Avengers. I will continue to defend this nation from any and all threats it may face. But as of today, I am not a super hero. Now and forevermore, I am a man of the people. Together, you and I will identify and confront America's problems. Together, we will figure out what we are and what we can be. Together, we will define the American Dream and make it an American reality.", "I believe in an idea, an idea that a single individual who has the right heart and the right mind that is consumed with a single purpose, that one man can win a war. Give that one man a group of soldiers with the same conviction, and you can change the world."

Name: Wolverine

Height: 5' 3"

Weight: 300lbs (with Adamantium skeleton), 195lbs (without Adamantium skeleton)

Real Name: James Howlett

Origins: Alberta, Canada

Home Base: Mobile

Nicknames: Logan, Patch, Captain Canada, Weapon X, Death, Mutate #9601, Emilio Garra, Weapon Chi, Experiment X, Agent Ten, Peter Richards, Mai' keth, Black Dragon, Captain Terror, John Logan, Jim Logan, Weapon Ten, Canucklehead, Canada, Wildboy,

Powers: Wolverine is a mutant who has been given an unbreakable Adamantium skeleton from the Weapon X program. His primary mutant power is an accelerated healing process that enables him to regenerate damaged or destroyed tissue, including internal organs within hours to seconds (usually depending on the extent of his wounds). He is virtually immune to all poisons, diseases, infections and most drugs (except in massive doses). In addition, this healing factor provides him with an extended lifespan by slowing the effects of the aging process. Due to his constant cellular regeneration he can push his muscles beyond the natural limits of the human body without injury, granting him some degree of superhuman strength, stamina, speed, agility and reflexes. His body can withstand certain elemental extremes, particularly the cold. He possesses superhumanly acute senses that are comparable to those of certain animals. He also has the ability to sense the emotional state of animals on a basic level such as fear, anger, happiness or pain. He can even communicate with them to make the animal aware of his actions and or his intent. His natural skeleton includes six retractable 12-inch long bone claws, three in each arm, that are housed beneath the skin and muscle of his forearms. He can, at will, release these claws through his skin beneath the knuckles on each hand. He can unsheathe any number of his claws at once, although he must keep his wrists straight at the moment his claws pass from his forearms into his hands. The claws are made of thick bone and are sharp enough to slice through substances as durable as most metals, wood, and stone. He has shown to have tremendous tenacity and willpower making him highly resistant to telepathic probing and assault. Sometimes he will lapse into a "berserker rage" while in combat. In this state, he lashes out with the intensity and aggression of an enraged animal and is even more resistant to psionic attacks. He is highly intelligent, fluent in various languages and an expert in multiple types of weapons, vehicles, computer systems, explosives, and assassination techniques. Due to his extensive training as a soldier, CIA operative, samurai, spy, Avenger and X-Men, he is almost unmatched in hand-to-hand combat, having mastered virtually every fighting style on Earth. He is also well versed in pressure points and the art of espionage.

ParaphernaliaAdamantium-Laced Skeleton; his entire skeleton, including his bone claws, are laced with the rare, artificial, and virtually indestructible alloy known as Adamantium. As a result, his bones are virtually unbreakable. The presence of the Adamantium has further enhanced the already razor sharp edge of his bone claws. Aside from being practically indestructible, the claws are capable of cutting just about any solid material. The Adamantium also dramatically increases the effectiveness of his punches and kicks.

Favorite Expressions: "I'm the best there is at what I do, but what I do isn't very nice.", "Bub.", "Can I get Wolverine before he turns me into shih kabob with those claws? Now bub, seein' that those claws are adamantium, the strongest metal known, and can slice through vanadium steel like a hot knife through butter, buddy, you gotta ask yourself: do I feel lucky?"

THE SLUGFESTS

Captain America and Wolverine have been friends for a very long time. They have teamed up hundreds of times since the 1940's and continue to fight the good fight. While they make an incredible pair who have tremendous respect for each other, they also have very different personalities making them, at times, uneasy allies. So, you could say, that they have had their fair share of disagreements throughout the years. To list all the times they have argued would be monotonous and irrelevant to this write up. And I only listed every time the two heroes actually fought or "almost" fought in official Marvel continuity. No alternate reality or alternate timeline versions of each character are listed and only the "REAL" Captain America, a.k.a. Steve Rogers makes the cut (no facsimiles like Bucky Barnes, Sam Wilson or the like are included).

I will explain each encounter in detail. Unfortunately, all fights and situations are not always so clear cut and I've tried my very best to be fair, objective and unbiased about the outcome of each battle. A "MATCH UP" is considered a round within a fight or face off confrontation. Since situations can be erratic in the story, there can be multiple outcomes between opponents in a fight. I will continually list each "MATCH UP" with a result and tally it. A "MATCH UP" will only result in a "WIN" if the losing character is rendered unconscious, teleported away against their will or immobilized in such a fashion that they are only freed by the other combatant or an ally. There may even be cases when a character gets a victory due to interference of their teammates, partners, etc. This may not be a definitive "WIN" but it will still be tallied against the losing opponent and explained so. When a character gets an "EDGE" result, they had the advantage at the end of the fight but the opponent may still be conscious or fighting on, so it will not be tallied against him. A "DRAW" result means no one was victorious during that encounter. A "NONE" result means there was no way a logical result could be given in that confrontation or situation from the two characters facing off and this can occur for a number of reasons and will be explained in the text. And finally, an "UNKNOWN" result means the ending of the fight was never shown so a definitive result cannot be given. At the end, I tallied up the totals so you can come to your own conclusions and be the judge to see who holds the overall edge in this legendary battle.

CAPTAIN AMERICA ANNUAL #8 (1986)
Boasting one of the most iconic covers ever, "Captain America vs Wolverine" starts off with a bang! Although the fight itself was short-lived, it did spark off an incredible amount of questions that would ignite this rivalry forever. Who was truly the better combatant? Fanboys of both characters had their opinions and fans demanded another encounter.

Captain America arrives at a factory just as Wolverine does; when Cap tries to question him, Wolverine attacks. The fight is brief but intense as it is quickly interrupted by the robot Tess bursting through the wall and assaulting both of them. Eventually both heroes managed to sever the head of TESS-1 because the joints were not laced with Adamantium. At the end, Captain America says to Wolverine that he would never be able to join a team like the Avengers, because of his behaviors. RESULT: DRAW

He tells them to let him go, but Captain America puts a hand out towards the X-Men and warns Wolverine to back off, telling him not to do anything stupid. Claws unsheathed, Logan grins and exclaims that the only stupid moves are made by folks who cross him. "Care to try your luck?’" he asks before Storm tells Wolverine that this is not the time. RESULT: NONE

While chasing Magneto the Avengers arrive and Storm tells them to back off. Wolverine adds that Magneto is one of the X-Men, and that the X-Men take care of their own. Thor tells Wolverine to have a care, as he does not tremble at his ill-mannered threats, while Captain America thinks to himself that this is insane, as the X-Men are not criminals, yet he cannot understand why they are siding with a madman like Magneto. Suddenly, Magneto cries ‘Silence! There is no need for you to fight!’ Magneto then declares that he wishes to consult with Captain America and the X-Men immediately, and while the remaining five Avengers are still frozen in their tracks, Cap and the X-Men disappear. RESULT: NONE

In a lab, Nightshade demonstrates to the town's master, Dredmund, that their captive, Wolverine, has an ability to heal that prevents her werewolf serum from transforming him as it did the townspeople. Instead, Dredmund puts Wolverine under his hypnotic control. Outside, Moonhunter searches in vain for the two Avengers. Still-undetectable they proceed amidst the now human townspeople who search for them, and enter the town hall. Out of the shadows, the mesmerized Wolverine lunges at Cap, and their fight carries them out into the street. Cap tries to reason with Wolverine during the scrap but this will leave him vulnerable to a headbutt and become pinned by the crazed mutant. But before Wolverine can land the killing blow, Moonhunter then takes this opportunity to knock Cap out with a tranquilizer dart. RESULT: WIN WOLVERINE (While this is not a definitive "WIN" for Wolverine by any means, he did have Cap at a great disadvantage before Moonhunter interfered to take the Avenger out of the fight.)

Now with Capwolf going berserk due to his cut, he will slash at Logan's face blinding him and then tosses the mutant into the group of werewolves before escaping. WOLVERINE: ORIGINS #4 (2006)
Wolverine looking for Nuke ends up crossing paths with Captain America (who is doing the same) in Vietnam. Both expert hand-to-hand fighters go back and forth showcasing their skills against each other and both guys start to bleed. Logan starts to talk trash to get Cap angry and unfocused. But it doesn't work as Cap throws his shield toward Logan, and as he blocks it gives him the chance to jump and attack him again. Logan realizes his mistake now. Logan falls on the grass, and Cap uses his arms to hold Logan’s claws toward his face and neck, shouting and asking if he saw that coming. Wolverine thinks Cap must believe he’s stupid or something as he easily sheathes his claws back in, having his fists free. Cap then crushes the tendons in his forearms, so his claws won’t work anymore. But Logan also scored a trick of his own when he kicks Cap off of him. As Cap falls in pain on the ground, Logan smirks that the deep cut he gave Cap in his thigh is what doctors call a “massive hematoma” and it could eventually kill him. As Logan gets up and rest against a tree to take a breather, he mentions they’re both pretty screwed. Thing is, he’s going to heal up in a little while, but not Cap. Suddenly, someone takes a swing at Logan. He ducks just in time, but the swing slices the tree Logan rested against in half! Cap tells Logan not to worry about him, as he’ll be just fine. Holding Logan’s Murasma sword in his hands, Captain America is ready for more as he orders Logan to get back on his feet and march to the extraction point, where a helicopter will be waiting. Logan wonders about Nuke. Cap promises that once he handed Logan off, he’ll come back for Nuke. He orders Wolverine to move. RESULT: EDGE CAPTAIN AMERICA

TALLY: MATCH UPS: 8  CAPTAIN AMERICA: 1 - WOLVERINE: 1

As they walk to the helicopter, Cap hears something snapping behind him. Nuke, crawling out of some bushes, tries to grab his leg but Cap quickly jumps into safety. Wolverine tries to attack Nuke, but Cap won’t let him and uses the Muramasa sword to slice Logan’s chest! Logan falls down on the ground holding his wound but starts to lose control. Cap then punches Nuke in the face and declares that he won’t let any of this get further out of control. Wolverine, now in a berserker rage, suddenly attacks Cap from behind, punching at the back of his head while taking his shield and throwing it away. Cap then tries to hit Logan with the sword but since Logan is sitting on his back, Cap can’t see anything and Logan takes the sword from him. Cap orders Logan to stand down, or else he’ll put him down himself! But the pain of the wound in his leg from their previous fight gets worse, causing Cap to collapse. Knowing Cap is badly hurt and with only his fists to protect himself, Wolverine leaps at him with the sword for the kill. Suddenly, out of nowhere, Wolverine’s attack gets interceded by Hellion's telekinesis field and he tells Logan that he won’t be killing Captain America today. RESULT: EDGE WOLVERINE (I couldn't give Wolverine the definitive "WIN" because even though Cap was badly hurt, he was still conscious and prepared to defend himself.)

Variant Cover

WOLVERINE: ORIGINS #5 (2006)
While in the telekinesis field, Wolverine throws his Muramasa sword at Hellion and Cap warns the boy to get down! As Hellion scared covers his eyes, Cyclops quickly fires an optic beam at the sword, deflecting it away from the boy just in time. Now free of the field, Wolverine has fully healed from his injuries and pops his Adamantium claws out and tries to slice Cap. But Cap protects himself by using his shield and they engage into another scrap. Cap orders everyone to move to the flanks while he goes up the middle! Logan again jumps at Cap, but Cap punches Logan away again with his shield. Suddenly, the wound in Cap’s leg starts to hurt again, forcing the hero to his knee. Ready to press the advantage, Wolverine is ready to kill Cap, but Cyclops shouts at Logan not to do it and starts shooting blasts non-stop. His first beam gives Cap enough time to roll to safety, while Logan jumps over him in an attempt to reach his Muramasa sword. Logan manages to pick it up and, as Scott fires another beam, Logan swings with the sword, causing the beam to bounce off of it. The beam ricochets against Cap’s shield, which then gets fired right in front of Scott’s feet as he manages to jump to safety. Logan angrily turns his attention towards Hellion, who panics. At that very moment, Emma telepathically shouts at all the combatants to stop fighting! RESULT: DRAW (While Wolverine clearly had Cap injured and on the ropes again, the Sentinel of Liberty had Cyclops and Hellion there to back him up and save him from possible death. I had to list this fight as a "DRAW" because all the combatants were still fighting until Emma Frost showed up and stopped them.)

TALLY: MATCH UPS: 10  CAPTAIN AMERICA: 1 - WOLVERINE: 1

WOLVERINE: ORIGINS #20 (2008)
Logan recalls a past adventure with Cap and Bucky during WWII and tells about Cap giving him one of his all-time greatest beatings. On the mission, Logan had to protect Baron Von Strucker and Baron Zemo in a plan even if it meant he had to get them back to their Nazi cronies. As soon as Logan got close to enough, Cap delivers a vicious upper cut to Logan’s jaw and calls him a traitor. From the side, one of the German soldiers raises his gun to take out Cap but is stopped by Zemo, who tells him that he wants to see this. Cap begins to pummel Logan with punches and kicks. The final blow occurred when Cap backhanded Logan across the face with his shield. With the Canadian half out of it, Cap picks him up with one arm by the throat and says to him that he trusted him. Logan is then shot before he can say anything further. When the U.S. troops finally attack, a firefight ensues. In the chaos, Zemo and Strucker are able to escape. RESULT: WIN CAPTAIN AMERICA

TALLY: MATCH UPS: 11  CAPTAIN AMERICA: 2 - WOLVERINE: 1

AVENGERS: THE CHILDREN'S CRUSADE #3 (2010)
Captain America and other Avengers come to help Wolverine. As Cap gives Wolverine a hand, Wolvie releases his claws to Cap's neck and confronts him on how serious Cap is about saving the Scarlet Witch. Cap pulls Wolverine's hand down by the wrist and tells him saving her should be a first priority. RESULT: NONE

TALLY: MATCH UPS: 12  CAPTAIN AMERICA: 2 - WOLVERINE: 1

AVENGERS VS X-MEN #3 (2012)
Wolverine learns that Hope has escaped Utopia, and that the X-Men have apparently surrendered to the Avengers. Captain America divides the Avengers into various teams to search for Hope at the locations they were given. Wolverine is on his team, but Cap believes he has lost his ability to be impartial on this mission and suggests for Wolverine to take a walk with him. They leave the cockpit of the ship and enter into a different room. Cap says that he is not sure he can trust Wolverine to follow his orders on this mission. Wolverine replies that he is willing to do whatever it takes, because he has seen what the Phoenix does. But Cap tells him that he will not let him kill that girl. Wolverine refuses to listen, so Cap knows Logan is going to have to sit this mission out. Cap takes initiative and punches Wolverine in the face, knocking him backwards.  Wolverine attacks and an intense fight ensues with both combatants eventually dripping in blood. Suddenly, Cap's plan comes together as Giant Man comes up behind Wolverine and whacks him on the back, knocking him to the ground. As Wolverine tries to get up, Captain America slams his shield into Logan’s face. ‘Now, Sharon!’ Captain America calls out, and a hatch suddenly falls away from the Quinjet. Wolverine is sucked backwards by this and then Giant Man kicks him out of the jet. Logan plummets to the icy landscape below. RESULT: WIN CAPTAIN AMERICA (This was not a definitive "WIN" as Cap had his Avenger teammates help him remove Wolverine from the Quinjet. But that was Cap's plan from the beginning and as always, it worked perfectly.)

FINAL TALLY: MATCH UPS: 13  CAPTAIN AMERICA: 3 - WOLVERINE: 1

HONORABLE MENTION

Captain America and Wolverine have fought many times in non-cannon stories (and sometimes with deadly results). I've noticed throughout the years that both Cap and Wolverine fans often make arguments showing these comics to make claims to their debates. But truth be told, despite some interesting stories, these issues don't count. I see them as writers' interpretations of “Captain America vs Wolverine” battles without continuity restraints so they always have fun twists of “What could have been?” While I will not list those issues in this write up, I wanted to list my favorite Cap and Wolverine fight that occurred outside of actual Marvel continuity.

ULTIMATE WAR #4 (2003)
Nick Fury comes to the incorrect conclusion that the X-Men have joined forces with Magneto to fight mankind, so he sets his Ultimates on the chase to stop them. In the battle, Wolverine drops down from out of the sky and sinks his claws into the back of Iron Man's armor. The two combatants crash land into the ground. When Wolverine gets up, he finds Captain America standing before him. Cap is surprised to learn that Wolverine has no memory of their time together in World War II. He uses this to his advantage however to draw Wolverine closer to him, enabling Cap to take him down with a machine gun. He knew that Wolverine's healing factor would prevent him from dying, but the wounds are severe enough to take him out of the fight.

ANIMATED

In this section I list every time that Captain America and Wolverine engage in combat with each other. No cartoons or animated features with friendly team ups or situations are included.

ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN (SEASON: 2 EPISODE: 20 "GAME OVER" 2013)
When Arcade takes over S.H.E.I.L.D.'s Life Model Decoy robots and puts Spider-man and Captain America through a video game of death, they confront Wolverine. Cap and Wolverine battle it out until Wolvie realizes Cap isn't a robot. They will soon team up together with Spider-man to stop Arcade and his maniacal plans.

THE END??

In 13 official match ups, Captain America takes the overall edge 3 to 1 over Wolverine. But in the open-ended world of comics, those numbers don't always tell the whole story. And in a fight between these two tenacious hand-to-hand specialists a lot of factors have to be taken into consideration when you compare them in a head-to-head scrap. So, I'll have to break it down and put all the facts out on a Star-Spangled table for you.

Although Wolverine only has 1 controversial victory over Cap in Captain America #404, you still have to give him the advantage over the Sentinel of Liberty in a straight up fight. As you can clearly see in Wolverine Origins #4 and 5, Wolverine simply outlasts Cap by being able to take more and most importantly - heal quickly. Cap on the other hand was becoming more and more weaker as the fight progressed and he started to fade. Wolverine may have only officially scored an "EDGE" and a "DRAW" in some of those match ups due to circumstances, but truth be told, he almost "KILLED" Cap in them. And that's way more impressive than just a regular "WIN" in my book.

Cap's way to victory is clearly seen in Avengers vs X-men #3 (Captain America #405 doesn't really count because Cap was enhanced as Capwolf and in Wolverine Origins #20 it was a young Logan that Cap beat up who wasn't really fighting him back). With prep time, a plan and using his superior tactical efficiency on Wolverine, he can, and most likely will win this fight. Cap is notorious for finding ways to come out on top despite any circumstances, that's something he does better than just about anyone else in comics... including Wolverine himself. While Cap is skilled and strong enough with his shield to get a legitimate knock out "WIN" over Logan in a one-on-one fight (as seen in Wolverine #25), it's just not going to happen often. Wolverine has taken punches from Marvel's heaviest hitters and still came back for more. So, expect Cap to forget about a straight up slugfest altogether and use his skills and shield to nullify Logan's claws and get his victory with a well-executed plan.

So, in the end, fanboys can make their arguments on who has the better overall physical statistics and skill set between them. Truth is that both of these heroes are so close that it's hard to give a definitive answer and both generate almost an equal amount of respect from others because of it. Cap is definitely the more inspirational to those around him. Even Logan himself takes a back seat to the leadership and influence of the Sentinel of Liberty and historically has time and time again. But I would say that Wolverine is much more feared. His Adamantium claws are so incredibly lethal that very few opponents want to go up against him. Although technically, Cap is a slightly better overall hand-to-hand fighter with his greatest edge being his strategic mind (that's his bread and butter). But whatever the Weapon X lacks in straight up fighting skills compared to the Super-Soldier, his Adamantium Skeleton coupled with his insane durability and healing factor will easily make the difference. Logan simply has the ability to outlast Cap and use his ferocity and claws to cause more lasting damage than Cap is able to cause upon him. The odds are just in Wolverine's favor because it all comes down to the fact that he can make some mistakes in this fight while Cap cannot afford too. One major misstep or a few little ones and Cap is toast. That's why I have to give the slight overall edge in this match up to the ol' Cunucklehead, Wolverine - SNIKT!!!

Agree?? Disagree?? Let's hear it fanboys!!

  4. This is a very close match up and could go either way. I guess it all depends on the circumstances. And I agree that Logan has the edge due to his healing factor on a physical level, but I think Cap is just too smart for him. I'll go with Cap after a long intense fight.

  5. Yes, Captain seems to have the brains for a battle while Logan has the healing factor. So, it's a close call. Great website.

  8. I'm a fan of Captain America, so I'm going with Captain America. Wolverine won't know what hit him.

I also have a question. When was the first time Cap ever ricocheted his shield off something? I know it can't be his first issue back in 1941 because that shield was not meant to be thrown. Help me out. Was it during the Golden or Silver Age?

  9. Great read. Thanks for the analysis. I have to disagree with the AvX Captain America "win" though. I see your point in that it was his plan from the start, but "make sure you jump in and help me if I can't win the fight" doesn't really hold ground in my book. Did his plan work, sure. Did he "win" the fight? Hardly.

    1. As I stated, it wasn't a "definitive" win, but Cap accomplished what he set out to do; remove Wolverine from the mission by any means necessary, and he did. Looks like a victory in my book...

  10. Logan is slow, Cap has speed. Logan fights like an animal, has no plans or strategy. Steve beats him all the way. Wolvies only chance is healing.

    1. Logan is very fast and agile. He isn't just a brawler; he's a very skilled martial artist, one of the best in the Marvel universe. He is also quite capable at strategizing -- it just so happens that a straight-on assault is usually all he needs.

Steven, though, exceeds him in these areas. Mostly in terms of brains. His advantage in speed and skill are much smaller. Not enough to overcome the advantage of unbreakable claws, bones, and healing factor. But enough to be combined with his superior tactics to get the win anyway.

That's what makes this fight so great: It could plausibly go either way. Yet with Wolverine's advantages it in a way makes Cap the underdog who has to rely on pluck and wits to defeat the berserker mutant, which is why despite being a Logan fan I gotta root for Cap. :)

      Delete
  11. Oh and the other reason to root for Cap is that if the two do have a dust up, it's *probably* Wolvie who deserves a beating. :)

  12. "Unbiased" my glutes. You're a Wolverine fanboy, and it's more than obvious. Cap would crush that runt-- he's bigger, he's faster, and he's much, much smarter.

  13. This is really a tough pick because it's Cap's mind vs Wolverine's healing and both are off the charts compared to other heroes. I think it'll come down who can get lucky.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Cap is not faster than Wolverine, etc, etc. In the most recent X Men vs Avengers title, Wolverine dodged Caps efforts several times and this one was looking like a stalemate before Giant Girl or whatever she is called booted Wolvie out of a plane. I think this is one of THE great fights, because the shield is a great counter for the claws, but ultimately, I think Wolverine just needs to get one claw strike in, or big punch and Cap is in trouble. He doesn't heal fast, Wolverine does.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I also want to add that Wolverine is at a disadvantage in these battle scenarios v Cap or Spiderman, because he doesn't really want to hurt them so he refrains from using those claws, whereas Cap can go full out because he knows Wolverine will heal. realistically, one adamantium laced punch to the chops should KO cap as he just an enhanced human and if Wolverine were mind controlled or something he would obviously kill Cap with one slice of those claws. Because Wolverine holds back, Cap will also be a good match for Wolverine.

    1. Well I think if we debate off the more off the modern mythology of these two characters? Wolves adamantium claws, bones slow down his healing factor. While being virtually indestructible. Cap now seems to have a small healing factor more so than his older comics suggests. His vibranium adamantium shield can shadder most metals.

Now logan is heavier his reflexes are slower than caps but has more damage with every connecting blow. Now the claws vs shield the vibranium could possibly crack adamantium which would put logan in slightly unusual situation while caps ability to heal against flesh/stab wounds is his down side vs logan.

  16. everyone tends to forget that when wolverine fought captian america in wolverine origins and xmen vs avengers he used more stratigic moves vs lashing out because hes aware of captian americas fighting capabiltiy. Wolverine usually only uses martial arts when fighting soomone in that caliber. ..such as romolius and Daken. all the above pictures and issues proves my point. Both to me are evenly matched fighting skills wise. It all depends on the circumstance. Both are at level seven since the comic book trading card days

As everybody knows that is not always true and does not dictate victory in a fight unless your're a popular underdog like Spidey. If that were the case, Cap wouldn't have got completely schooled by Cyclops in AvgVsXm. Ditto for Luke Cage and Thing being owned by Namor(which he would've done without the Phoenix anyway)

Yeah, and you're a completely unbiased Wolverine hater right? Anyone with an ounce of sense and some knowledge of the characters knows in stats Wolverine totally outclasses Cap in every way.

""""""Now Logan is heavier his reflexes are slower than caps but has more damage with every connecting blow. I mean no offense or insult, but don't spout moronic rubbish like this. Crack adamantium? Are you serious? Adamantium is one of the hardest materials in MU. Cap's shield shattering any metal doesn't hold a candle against it. If you have forgotten, Wolverine's claws have sliced through most substances and people in the MU. Going by that logic, I could say Wolverine can slice up the shield. Wolverine is just as fast as Cap in reflexes and faster in speed. The heaviness of Adamantium was greatly reduced after Apocalypse went through Wolverine. If you ask me, on paper, Wolverine destroys Cap even without his claws.

""""""With the power cosmic the Silver Surfer would obliterate them both.""""""
Totally unrelated and completely obvious nonsense troll statement

because even if I think Captain is smarter etc. etc. Wolverine has better chances because, the Captain can hit Wolvie as often as he want, Logan will not die. But Stevie will. If Wolverine just once brush the Cap with his claws it can be over. No fast healing for the Cap.

  21. Captain America can only win by using his shield to hit wolverine because of the adamantium laced bones and because of the way Wolverine heals which is way faster than Capt.

Captain America packs less power on his punches due that he does not have any metal on his bones like Wolverine does.

When Wolverine had a regular normal skeleton back in WWII but a faster healing rate than Captain America could fight him and beat him with ease.

Now Wolverine with the adamantium on his bones then Captain America might not takes this as easy and will need a strategy and more brains than brawn.

They are both great h2h close fighters but Wolverine can take much more pain. Captain America cannot make any mistake or we can be knocked out and possibly killed,

  22. Take away Cap's shield, put away Wolverine's claws but have him retain the adamantiun skeleton, Wolverine wins in an unbiaed story.

  27. Lets try again: part 1
My combat breakdown of Wolverine vs Captain America:
Damn, didn't this take me a lot of days to complete.
John, I saw your comment on Comicvine in reply to the combat breakdown asking for a similar comment in your blog. I am not him, and while his style of debating was good, his sources were not the best, had a lot of miconceptions and ergo his analysis was not the best (I don't claim mine are the best either, but I'll try my best):

*Strength(something which fanboys jump to first): Despite what Cap fanboys believe or want to believe, Logan has the edge and is Cap's superior in this section, though by a very small margin. Just because Logan doesn't show off his strength every time doesn't mean he is weaker. Even most of those who argue that Cap is stronger (they are absolutely wrong) say that Wolverine has better striking power due to effectively having metal (not to mention adamantium) knuckledusters, which is what has more relevance in fighting than lifting, thereby solidifying Logan's edge in the physical department.

*Speed: Another area where Logan has a slight edge over Cap. Logan could be called equal to Cap or very slightly inferior previously due to the Adamantium skeleton weighing him down,(even then he has equal speed feats) but after Apocalypse's procedure the Admantium's weight was greatly reduced, giving Logan another small edge. At times equal at Cap's highest.

*Reflexes: They are pretty much equals in this area. But many people think Logan's reflexes are much lower than Cap's as he doesn't use them often. As Logan said during Fallen Son, he likes to take bullets so that it increases his desire to hurt attackers and he feels better about hurting them. Logan has also shown a masochistic streak, so there's that too. I've seen Logan dodge POINT BLANK Machine Gun fire while in MID-AIR and then STAND THERE and TANK THE BULLETS after he had landed. Its just a habit and its not because he can't dodge bullets. Cap isn't faster nor does he have better reflexes than Logan, Cap has to dodge and block while Wolverine doesn't have to due to his adamantium skeleton and healing factor.

*Agility: Steve gets the slight edge here. While Apocalypse procedure reduced a lot how much the adamantium skeleton weighed down Logan, it did not completely negate it, and thereby Cap gets the edge. Even without the metak in his skeleton Logan's agility can't be more than Cap, at the max its equal.

*Skill: Another area where Cap gets the edge, though a small one. Logan is very skilled himself, and will use it when it comes to it. Logan is much more experienced and skilled than when he and Cap were facing off years ago. This is only about pure MA skills. And if you guys are gonna talk about marksmanship, trap making, bombing, stealth, assasination, map making and all that unwanted crap, most of which would be of no use in a straight up fight, Wolverine is even with Cap in those areas and even better in some areas. Both were soldiers remember?

*Experience: Here Logan gets the edge. When Cap was hibernating as a icicle, Logan had been fighting and training that he now surpasses Cap in this area, though by a small margin. The people going on about Cap was a superhero while Wolverine was a foot soldier forget that how much cannon fodder the foot soldiers are likely to become. Also, Logan had secretly served as both supervilllain and hero during these times, and was in mutiple secret superhuman and non-superhuman teams, many sent on top secret missions, so that argument is silly.

  28. Part 2 (I hate I have to adopt same style as one of the biggest butthurt hulk hater poster on this site):
*Experience: Here Logan gets the edge. When Cap was hibernating as a icicle, Logan had been fighting and training that he now surpasses Cap in this area, though by a small margin. The people going on about Cap was a superhero while Wolverine was a foot soldier forget that how much cannon fodder the foot soldiers are likely to become. Also, Logan had secretly served as both supervilllain and hero during these times, and was in mutiple secret superhuman and non-superhuman teams, many sent on top secret missions, so that argument is silly.

*Durability: Logan gets a massive edge here. Due to his superhumanly durable skeleton and the adamantium on it, and the enhanced durabilty of other parts of the body plus the healing factor, Logan's durability is way above Cap.

*Endurance / Stamina: Another area where Logan gets a big edge, though not as big as the durability. Logan's healing factor allows him to push himself more than Cap by a mile. Though the SSS allows Cap to push himself a lot more than many, he can hang with Wolvie for a lot more than many of his class. Heck, in his higher end feats Logan has kept on fighting even when his internal organs were in pieces.

*Tactical Power: An area where Cap gets a big edge. As another website said, Cap would have already begun to make his plan just as the first blow is struck. The only reason why he doesn't get here a massive edge is because, Wolverine is a highly capable strategist himself who has shown more than once that he is quite capable of leadership and strategizing.

*Mindset: Curiously, both have an advantage here. As someone here commented, Wolverine has to hold back against Cap (and others as well) so that the effect won't be lethal, while Cap can go all out knowing that Wolverine can heal. On the other hand, Logan would be more willing to use quite brutal and dangerous methods if necessary.

*Intelligence: Neither of them are super genuises working in a lab, but in battle smarts and the battle of smarts, Cap again takes the edge here. The Super Soldier Serum has not only made Cap an enhanced human in physical stats, but also enchanced his mental prowess and intelligence. Steve posseses eidetic memory and is capable of handling multiple streams of information and form a near flawless strategy. But he again fails to get a big edge here as, to quote Marvel wiki, "While seemingly brutish, Wolverine is quite intelligent". The many years of life has developed Logan's intelligence, battle instincts and battle smarts.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Part 3:
*Willpower and Determination: Quite equal in this regards. Steve is more known for it, but from what I've see, Logan's his equal.
**Pain Tolerance: Something which I view as a combination if willpower, endurance, durability and mindset, but mostly that of willpower. While both have great pain tolerance, I have to give Logan the edge here, 'cause he was pretty much born with it. Every time he pops his claws, it is a sign of his massive pain tolerance. Walking through a hailstorm of bullets needs quite the pain tolerance too. Even when he had practically no healing factor he was still popping bone claws on a regular basis despite the blleding and the long lasting pain. Even now when he has no healing factor he has no problem popping his claws every once in a while. Not to mention the adamantium poisoning and carrying around the heavy metal inside his body is quite painful. And all the things he goes through, yeah, Logan has the edge in pain tolerance.

*Paraphernalia/Tech/Weapons: As every body knows, Logan almost always uses no other weapons than his claws and Cap almost always uses no other weapon than his shield. Captain America's shield is an excellent weapon which provides an excellent defence and a good offence. But Wolverine's claws should not be underestimated here. Not only they are an incredible offence, Wolverine has shown himself to be very adept in using them as a good defence, like slapping bullets out of the air using his claws and blocking other attacks with them, as he doesn't have to worry about them being damaged due to their indestructible nature. As Cap (most of the times) has only punches, kicks and attacks with his shield, Wolverine can block most of his attacks comfortably if he chooses to. Not to mention Cap's armor and shield can be separated from Cap, while Logan's claws can't be, giving Wolverine the edge here. And when it comes to using other weapons, the chances they would use any other weapon is equally slim, and if it comes to that, I'd say Wolverine has the edge there. Not only can Wolverine deal with the effects of other weapons better, I'd say Wolverine is better at using other weapons. In guns, Cap is slightly better but will be able to do next to nothing to Wolverine, who is not so behind in the department and is quite good at firearms himself, but if it comes to swords, the Marvel Universe will be expressing their condolences for Cap for being dead or dismembered, for Wolverine is one of the best swordsmen on the planet and Cap has shown nothing much in that category. Steve is dead if Wolverine gets his hands on a sword.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Part 4:
*Other advantages / disadvantages: Despite everything, fights are not just clear cut. A lot if circumstances can be involved, and terrain, environment, the fighters' physical and mental condition, who gets the first blow in, who draws the first blood, if anybody gets external assistance or hinderance from individuals or other factors, how they consider each other and how much they are motivated to win. So lets check out the other advantages / disadvantages the fighters have shall we:
**Super Senses: Both possess senses above that of a normal human, but as pretty much every one in and out of Marvel universe knows, Wolverine has extremely advanced animal senses. He has known his opponents emotions and subliminal cues through their scent and noticing an energy blast coming for him by the pressure wave hitting his skin. At his best, Logan would know Cap is attacking before he does. Also, this also nullifies most stealth attacks. Very slightly for Cap and amost completely for Wolverine. Wolverine senses will tell him what is coming way before it hits him. On the other hand, Wolverine's senses can also be a disadvantage since there can be items that cause sensory overload, like sonics, etc., which will only have a much lesser effect on Cap. But Wolverine's pain tolerance, durabilty, healing and sheer willpower allows him to focus through it. So Logan has the edge here.

Exotic attacks: And by exotic attacks I mean what separates a fight between two martial artists and two street brawlers. I mean punching techniques, special kicks and other striking techniques, choke holds and other wrestling holds, throws, take-downs, momentum-shifting, and the even more exotic joint-locks, pressure point strikes, nerve clusters strikes, chi attacks, etc.
And Logan is quite used to the former, and uses them just as much as Cap, and also mostly immune the latter, and is quite proficient in them as well. Once, in fight that was supposed to be pure H2H, his enemy poisoned Wolverine and in the H2H fight then used nerve strikes and pressure point attacks with lethal intent and Logan took a lot of hits before popping his claws to defend himself. So while Logan is protected due to his durability and healing factor, Cap is not. Sure, he may have the enhanced human durabilty and healing, his armor and his shield, and his knowledge of such attacks to protect himself, but while similar attacks won't work on Wolverine, they will work on Cap. Given than Logan has dropped class 100's with such attacks, its highly possible Cap will fall before them too. So Logan gets the edge here.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Part 5:
**Range of attack: Cap obviously gets the edge here due to his shield. He has brought down orbital ICBMs with it, can perfectly ricochet it off anything and has incredible precision and aim with it, but it inherently also carries a disadvantage. Unlike guns or other ranged weapons, Cap can throw his shield only once, which leaves him vulnerable if the shild is caught and separated from him, but as seen during the Civil War, Cap's control over the shield greatly dilutes this disadvantage, though unfortunately does not nullify it completely. If the shield is taken by an enemy, Cap will have to fight in close range, which against Wolverine bad idea as he can take Cap's hits and tear him up with his claws. Due to Logan's agility and senses, he can dodge shield throws all day long. So while Cap has the ranged advantage, the advantage is really small.

**Attack rate: As everyone knows, in a fight, victory depends not only the power of the attacks, but where they hit, how much attacks are landed, and how fast the attacks hit. While no doubt Cap's enchanced speed and stamina along with his shield gives him a high attack rate, Logan's superior speed comabt speed on a similar level to Spider Man (not saying Captain America isn't) and his claws (and their larger number make it easier) gives Logan a solid edge in this area.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Part 6:
*Attack type: Contrary to what one expect both have similar attack types. Cap is capable of delivering slashing (yes and he has even decapitated a guy when bloodlusted) and blunt attacks with shield, along with his punches and kicks, and obviously Wolverine can deliver slashing, piercing and blunt damage with his claws, plus his adamantium laced punches and kicks. What gives Logan the solid edge in this area over Steve is that he can do more damage. While Cap has to put quite some effort to cut up things, Wolverine's deadly razor-sharp adamantium claws can cut through almost anything effortlessly. And due the protection of his adamantium skeleton and healing factor, Cap can only deal as much damage at a time, while Logan's only hindrance is Cap's shield. Wolverine bypassing it will be the end of Cap, and he will.

Recuperative capability/ rate: While Cap has a decent recuperative ability due to the SSS enhancements, Wolverine gets the obvious extreme edge due to his healing.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Part 7:
**Environmental advantage: How an environment will suit the combatants (And no this isn't a geography class nor do I teach it)
***City: In a city, Steve has a small edge. Keeping his distance, due to his mastery and range of shield throw, he can exploit his environment much better against his opponents. Though, Logan is no slouch at doing the same, ahs has used his claws to great effect in turning the environment hostile for his enemy. So Cap gets the very small edge in a city
***Forest: Logan gets a massive edge in a forest. His inner animal helps him out a lot. His animalistic senses will help him find his way in a forest, find a good hiding place and sense the approach of his opponents, while Cap may have good tracking skills, Wolverine is an even better tracker and hunter, who can mask his tracks very well. Coupled with Logan's empathic ability with animals, the chance of Cap getting the drop on him is very less. Thus in the woods Logan has the edge, and its a biig one.
***Mountainous / Hilly: Cap gets a very small edge due to his agilty allowing him to scale and move across the terrain better. But its really close due to Logan's practically wall crawling ability with his his claws with which he stabs and climbs vertical surfaces which can be used to hide.
***Shipyard / Beach: Cap gets a bigger edge here, especially in the first scenario. Not only does he get here the same environmental advantage he gets in a city, but if the fight gets into the water، Logan is hindered a lot, something which Cap can use to his advantage. But that doesn't mean Logan is finished once he gets into water. Logan has shown many times that he is quite capable of fighting underwater, and has oneshotted people underwater. Not saying Steve is gonna get one-shotted, but that the edge he gets underwater is not enough to own or dominate Logan.
***Factories / Tech. Plants: Logan gets a very small edge here. The cramped spaces in the factories are easier for Logan to get through due to his claws than they are for Cap, so due to the mobility advantage he gets the edge.
***Desert: Logan gets the edge here due to his healing factor allowing him to weather the harsh conditions better. He can't indefinitely, but he can do it better than Cap.
***Snowy, artic areas: Logan gets the edge here for th ame reason as above. I know some idiots who have given the crap reasoning that since Cap survived in the ice he would get the edge in cold, not thinking he was in suspended animation, and without knowing that Logan has been frozen and remained conscious and survived for quite some time by cannibalizing his own flesh, and has slept nude in artic conditions, which would be fatal for humans.
***Grassy plains: Logan gets the edge here due to being able to hide and move around better due to his animal senses.
***Swampy areas / Riversides: Roughly equal since the area hinders them almost equally, Logan being slowed down very slightly more than Cap, but its bears no consequence to this fight.
***Smelting areas / Electrical plants: Equal
***Volcanic ares: Wolverine gets a small advantage due tot he disadvantage Cap is the oxious fumes. Otherwise one throwing the other into the lava is quite equally likely, but while Wolverine can survive that and possibly come back into the battle, Cap can't
    ***Cage match: Cap is dead

    ReplyDelete
  34. Part 8:
*Help from others: A factor which can completely change the face of battles. As seen AvX, Cap was getting owned, then the tide of the battle changed as the Avengers came in. Cap gets the edge in this area since Wolverine is a loner and quite disliked among many teammates, who would rather sit and watch while Logan get pounded on if he is in no serious danger. He is also widely known as a brutal killer which reduces the chance of people coming to help him. Cap on the other hand is a very popular and charismatic hero, a role model known by many generations, who has been the leader of much more teams for much longer. Not to mention the fact that Cap has a much friendly looking appearance in and out of uniform than Wolverine whose claws, rage and freaky hairstyle and costume who put off and frighten people, due to which people readily assume Logan to be the bad guy. So Cap will get more help from others.

**Unusual attacks/Improvised weaponry/Unpredictability: Wolverine gets the edge in this department. Logan is much more adept at using things around him as a weapon, made easier due to his super strength, can whip up some of the craziest manuevers, and can perform kamikaze attacks if needed to due to his healing factor. While Cap can do the same, he falls a little short behind Logan
    in this department.

In the end, in every battle all the above factors boils down into these two categories, how much you can take it and then how much you can dish out in response, namely:

*Damage Soak: While Cap has a respectable damage soak, Wolverine massively outclasses Cap in damage soak due to his superior durability (due to his adamantium skeleton), endurance, healing and recuperative power, despite Cap's shield or armor.

*Damage Output: Due to his superior strength, speed, stamina, varied attack type and large number of very long and very sharp claws, Logan again vastly outclasses Steve in this area.

  35. Part 9:
    *Overall matchup and overview:
Aah, finally. As John said, both can win this fight, but currently Logan's chances have increased.
Logan has got power, skill and experience upgrades from where he was at the time of WW2.
As mentioned before, when Apocalypse gave Logan the adamantium back, he not only reduced how much the metal hampered Logan's movement, breduced by a large extent the metal poisonaing which slowed down Logan's healing factor, which is why he didn't immediately die after his loss of his healing factor.(It would have taken just longer than before for him to die. Metal poisoning was still there, but a lot lesser than before. So Beast synthesized a drug to counter it)
At his best, Wolverine's claws have carved up the likes of Namor, Hulk and Thor, taken down Thing, Abomination and even Hercules, and as Fifthchild from Comicvine said, "gone through Thanos (with Power Gem) and Gladiator like a hot knife through butter".

Logan has saved Cap's hide many times, at times even effortlessly taking down guys that give have given Cap trouble, dominate him or even outright owned him in a fight.
At his best, Wolverine's claws have carved up the likes of Namor, Hulk and Thor, taken down Thing, Abomination and even Hercules, and as Fifthchild said, "gone through Thanos (with Power Gem) and Gladiator like a hot knife through butter". Does Cap fanboys really believe that Cap even at his absolute best are as durable or heal as fast the above mentioned guys? Not to mention quite some of those guys are experienced and skilled fighters themselves and outclass Steve in one or more areas like strength, speed, durability, healing, viciousness, powers and versatality, etc.
Its pathetic that many of the guys supporting either side are unbelievably ignorant of both sides.
The movies take a large part of the blame here. Especially movie Wolverine who was a horrible excuse for a fighter.

If anyone says current Wolverine doesn't have healing factor, he still has his other powers and adamantium skeleton, which means he still has a degree of super strength and durability (demonstrated by beating up Nuke) and deadly adamantium claws, while Cap is now an ordinary old man, albeit an old man with high MA skills.

Wolverine can perform kamizkaze attacks if he needs to bring down cap, like grabbing the shield and then stabbing a nearby transformer to give Cap a lethal shock, but unlike the other villains, Wolvie would not do so to Cap because he certainly doesn't want to hurt Cap badly and he certainly won't be that desperate to beat Cap.

  36. Part 10:
*Out of the universe / Real life reasons:
I've always seen it as Cap more popular among writers- he was created first, make him look good otherwise he seems useless, dunno if it makes them feel patriotic or they proud writing that as the peak of humanity, etc.

Someone on another site compared this fight to the street level version of Hulk vs Thor, and how they go back and forth. I like that comparison. The only thing different about Hulk vs Thor rivalry is, one can take whatever the other can throw at him and dish out equally in return. The same cannot be said for Cap vs Wolvie.

They beleive Wolverine should not be able to do this, so every time he doe anything they don't like that is PIS. But its not the same for Cap.
Cap fanboy bullshit: "Do you really beleive Wolverine can lift that much?"
Some are unbearable and happen becuase of popularity power, like Logan taking down herald level beings, but for him its more beleivable than Cap due to Logan's claws, while Cap does it purely with a better plot armor and PIS power. At times what some say against Wolverine simply seem to be because they beleive Wolverine is limited so and so and he can and never should be above that. And some Cap fans cannot bear to see Wolverine lift more thatn their favorite hero so they lowball him at every chance they get.
Cap fanboy bullshit: "Do you really beleive Wolverine can lift that much?" is what you get most of the time. Some idiots actually beleive Wolverine is only as strong as an ordinary human. Even taking that bullshit into consideration, since ordinary humans have oneshotted Cap at times, I say Logan still has a chance.

And about the enemy of the state KO, that was because Wolverine had been quite battered up by the time Cap arrived and had been fighting several heroes for quite some time? Not to mention in a similar manner, Wolverine had one-hit-KOd Spidey with a cheapshot, but nobody mentions it. To make things even worse, they bring up CW Cap vs Spidey.
    TL:DR, Wolverine takes majority
So, Hastlavista baby. Old yes, but old is gold.

  37. John, when you said that during AvX, Cap and Wolverine had an intense fight which left them dripping with blood,I expected them to awash with blood or something. But this is what I saw, IIRC. Cap admonishes Logan for trying to kill Hope, and tells him that he won't let Logan kill that girl. Logan responds that he does what have to be done or otherCap socks Wolverine with a left hook, sending him crashing into the wall. Logan trash talks Cap, asking if Cap really thinks he can take him. Cap says he has no doubt and lunges forward with the shield. Logan weaves underneath the shield, saying Cap has no clue, gives Cap a minor slash on his abdomen, cuts out the shield's straps before high kicking Cap on his torso, sending him flying backwards. Cap leans the wall with the cuts on his abdomen bleeding slightly. Logan lunges forward, and Cap ducks under the stab, goes for his shield, and throws the shield smack dab onto Logan's oblongata, at which a slightly bloodied Logan asks Cap (whose costume is staned a bit from him cuts along with a bit of nosebleed from god knows what, since Logan never hit him in the face) if that's all he's got, at which 10 feet Giant Man suckershots him from behind, at which Cap tells him he has the Avengers as well, at which this exchange occurs:
    Giant Man: Sorry Logan
Wolverine: .....Sonnova...(Cap gets a clean shield bash onto Logan's face)
Cap: Now SHARON! (the flight hatch blows away)
    Logan(covering his face): ....What?...
Hank then kicks him out of the jet and he lands in Antartica.
So where's the dripping with blood or was that an exaggeration?

    1. Sadly, this is a comic fight that is written in the contemporary "decompression" format. There is honestly no telling how long the fight lasted, but we do know they were both bleeding and huffing and puffing. Due to their stamina they had to be fighting for longer than the comic shows (in my opinion). I see blood, I see a very intense fight were both combatants gave it everything they got.

  38. Gotta give the edge to Captain America.. His mind is his super weapon. And If he truly is the perfect human specimen then I can't see how Wolverine could be remotely close in terms of fighting ability, reflexes, speed, stamina, technique, flexibility and other combat traits regardless of how he has been depicted. And of course Cap has devoted far more time to strategy and tactical thinking.

Wolverine is a normal dude with great skills, but it's his mutant healing and skeleton/claws that make him tough. His physical attributes are excellent, but hardly "human perfection" like Cap.

Cap would have to go for a Coup de grâce as soon as possible in fight since a single blow from Wolverine could be fatal and the bastard wont die. I'd still pick Cap for 7 wins out of 10, mainly due to better tactics.

  39. Sorry for being pretty blunt, and I absolutely do not mean to offend you, but your post is quite ignorant and nonsensical. I hate to be rude, but your post is a logical fallacy. Let me break it down and explain it to you

"""""Gotta give the edge to Captain America.. His mind is his super weapon. And If he truly is the perfect human specimen then I can't see how Wolverine could be remotely close in terms of fighting ability, reflexes, speed, stamina, technique, flexibility and other combat traits regardless of how he has been depicted."""""

That's just pure bullshit reasoning. Whether in the real or comic world, we judge people's capabilities by what they have shown to do, not wildly vague speculation and hyperbole. And if you are relying on fancy titles or names, Wolverine has been called beyond human and superhuman.

And especially, human perfection referred to Cap's physical state, skills have nothing to do with it. Going with your logic, since there are several MA fighters in the comic world who are beyond Cap in skill, that makes them beyond human perfection, but the truth is almost none of them won't hold a candle to Cap in raw physical stats. See, your logic is a complete fail. Sorry, but that's the truth.

And about the mind, Wolverine's pretty smart too. Let's see what Forge said about Wolverine. He reported Logan's physical and mental state as equivalent to an Olympic-level gymnast performing a Gold-medal-winning routine whilst simultaneously beating four chess computers in his head.

Need I say anythong more? I say this. Despite his thuggish attitude, when he wants to, Wolverine can be very tactical and smart.

"""""And of course Cap has devoted far more time to strategy and tactical thinking.""""

Yes, but that doesn't mean Wolverine is an idiot or will be unable to make a counter strategy.

"""""Wolverine is a normal dude with great skills, but it's his mutant healing and skeleton/claws that make him tough. His physical attributes are excellent, but hardly "human perfection" like Cap"""""

Actually, Wolverine's body is beyond human perfection. And normal dude, seriously? You are simply going off the movies and e ven then Jackman's Wolverine was nothing normal. But that's not who we are discussing about here. Its comic Wolverine. Who is nothing like a normal guy. Someone who is so far off from a normal guy in every aspects. Lets go over the rudimentary and small potatoes.

Wolverine has been around for more than a century and half, so he has accumulated quite a lot of knowledge and experience far beyond an ordinary guy can.

For starters, Logan knows several international languages other than English. Spanish, German, Russian, Japanese, Mandarin, French, Cantonese, Portugese, Vietnamese, etc. Not something your average joe is capable of.

He's participated in World War 1 & 2, Civil War and pretty much every war between those and has been in several espionage, special ops and superhuman teams during his life, even acting as the leader for some of those groups. Massive combat experience and knowledge, along with weapon profiency and leadership experience. Massively above your normal guy.

For starters, Logan knows several international languages other than English like Spanish, German, Russian, Japanese, Mandarin, French, Cantonese, Portugese, Vietnamese, etc. Not something your average joe is capable of.

Then there are his raw physical stats, skills and other powers.

He was able to use his superhuman sense of smell to find an enemy hidden in a sewer at the other side of a city, had even tracked guys across the African continent with his sense of smell, discovered than Iron Man and Mr Fantastic were replaced by imposters when Daredevil, another one with superhuman senses could not. Daredevil has even admitted Wolverine's sense of smell is better than him. If you ask what Daredevil can do, for a small one, he can name each ingredient in a perfume with his smell, and can even differentiate perfumes of the same type made by different companies by minute variations in their scent. Wolverine can find subconscious cues of his enemies from their scent. His sense of hearing is so good that, he could hear a sound from across a block and determine it was the sound of flesh hitting metal. He could hear a teardrop falling in another room through a thick wall. He could determine how many people are in a misssile proof bunker from their breathing through the thick wall, despite those people wearing sound proof masks and trying to make as much less noise as possible. He has heard a sonic boom from across the planet. He has dodged energy blasts and bullets without seeing them by feeling their pressure wave on his skin, intercepting an arrow before Spiderman could, move so fast that he seemed to dissappear, made Spider man doubt his speed and effortlessly slapped away point blank gunfire with his claws. He has dodged automatic gunfire from multiple shooters, and dodged machine gun fire in mid-air more than once. Kaine, Spider-Man's physically superior clone, which includes being physically faster, but lacking Spider - sense, and Daredevil, who is an incredible bullet dodger himself, were amazed at how easily Wolverine weaved through bullets without getting hit. He has tagged speedsters like Speed Demon and Northstar. His reaction time has been measured to be 0.038s.

  41. Even without his healing, he has been able to take several blows from peak humans and still fight, survive a lightning charged speed blitz from Thor, headbutt the bulletproof and grenade proof Nuke into submission (doubles as a strength feat), fight for some time despite having molten metal over him, take hits from the super strong Lady Deathstrike, take few hits from Superior Venom etc. As you can see he is quite durable and has a ridiculous pain tolerance even not considering his healing.

Silver Samurai tried to take Logan's head off and failed. A robot once tried to cut off Logan's head and only cracked its 9 foot long 1 foot wide blade on Logan's adamantium spine. He was also barely damaged by swing from Skaar using his sword, which cuts through tanks like paper and is much stronger than steel or titanium. Bullets bounce off his adamantium skull and he doesn't notice. All his ligaments and tendons except the tendons in his wrist have been molecularly bonded with adamantium, so he can't he ripped apart either, which the 15 tonner Baal tried to and failed.

He has healed back from Nitro incinerating him to a skeleton, ditto for Dark Phoenix Cyclops. He has healed back from being in the vicinity of the Hiroshima nuke explosion. He has healed back from being on the surface od the sun and climbed out of a molten metal vat while still being a skeleton. He has heart ripped out of his chest, and even exploded in his chest and was still conscious. He had been stabbed in the heart by Deadpool, stabbed by the Juggernaut with a huge wooden pike, stabbed by X-23 in the heart and thrown dirt in the wound so that it does not heal, stabbed through the liver, and still kept fighting. He has been able to fight despite being slashed by the superstrong Gorgon with the godkilling Grasscutter sword. Had his throat cut through and still kept fighting.

He has been riddled with bullets and energy blasts and not slowed down a bit.

As for taking punches, Spider Man has unloaded on him and Wolverine has kept fighting on barely damaged several times. A pissed off Peter even threw him through the Avengers Tower's suppposedly unbreakable window onto the pavement several floors below and he was up like nothing happened. Scarlet Spider even said Wolverine kept coming back despite whatever he hit him with. Taken punches from the 15 tonner Baal. Taken hits from Namor which caused his internal organs to liquify and was still conscious and fighting. Hit several times by Hulkbuster Iron Man and shrugged it off. Stayed conscious after several hits from Skaar. Punched across several states by the Inhuman Gorgon and by the Hulk and shrugged it off. Tossed across Georgia by Rulk and shrugged it off. Hit by the Thing across a city block and shruggrd it off. Fell from orbit and shrugged it off. Shrugged of lightning bolts from Storm, Ragnarok (along with several kicks from him), a clone of Thor, and even a lightning bolt from Thor. Blasted by Iron Man and Firelord and shrugged it off.

While having his healing factor weakened due injury and poisoning, the latter which also left him unable to fight back properly, he was struck by several lethal presure point strikes (one of those strikes with a finger would kill a human) using a wooden sword before popping his claws to degend himself. He has shrugged off pressure point attacks from Echo, who has learned them from Daredevil. Speaking of DD, the famous scene where he hits Logan in the throat, Logan was not dropped, he was groaning in pain, which is WIS since Logan has incredible pain tolerance, having once beaten an enemy with a healing factor by setting both of them on fire. The writer Ennis even admitted to intentionally embarassing Wolvie and IIRC Marvel even released an apology for that storyline. His healing factor has shown to be able to adapt itself to threats.

  42. He has trained in several martial arts like Krav Maga, Budo, judo, the Japanese art of war Sun Tzu, Aijutsu, Ninjutsu, and Aikido  . He knows 18 forms of Kung Fu, exotic and forgotten israeli martial arts very few know, even alien martil arts of the Kree and of the Shiar. He's been so well trained in kenjutsu and samurai  sword fighting so well that he can fight blinfolded against other samurai in sword fights, and match the Silver Samurai and Elektra in blade fighting, who are renowned blade fighters in MU.

The mystical martial artist called Murderous Lion was curbstomped by Logan while having several of his skills temporarily being midwiped out. He has bested Bucky, a highly skilled fighter with a superhumanly strong bionic arm while having his hands tied, using just his legs. Logan curbstomped the mystic martial artists Black Dragon Squad, despite their ability to kill even him with one hit since their hits can cause deadly damage to one's soul as well as mind along with fatal physical inuries. On another never occasipn he faced another group mystical martial artists with one-hit-kill techniques and won without fighting back, i.e., he never got hit and they tired themselves out. He's been trained to see weak points in his opponents.

He has trained under top-tier skilled martial artists like Shang Chi, Ogun, Master Po, Silver Samurai, not mentioning his military, CIA and Special Ops training.

He has trained Kitty Pryde and Storm and they have becone quite skilled fighters thenselves.

He has easily bested Daredevil with his wrestling skills, owned a powerless Creel wuth one move while having no powers himself, and Creel was a professional boxer and a contender for national heavyweight championship and has bested Iron Fist in a sparring match.

Prof X was shocked to see that Wolverine was fighting simultaneously in the physical and mental plane at the same time, at which Wolverine replied he does not need to think to fight

  43. His bone claws can cut through concrete like a hot knife through butter, cut through kevlar and thick steel as if it were paper, cut through bulletproof superhumans, drop Ms. Marvel with one swipe, etc.

Now put adamantium in them and they can cut through pretty much anything in the MU.

With the metal skeleton and claws, Logan has cut a tree in half with one swipe, sliced off a Sentinel's arms with one swing, sliced off the bulletproof Lizard's large tail in one swing, carved up Omega Red armor, which is made if secondary adamantium, cut through Iron Man's armor, cut Thor right through his Asgardian armor, cut away the Juggernaut's armor, carved up World War Hulk, Hercules, Rulk and Shrulk, stabbed right through The Thing, Namor, Gladiator Kallark and even Infinity Gauntlet Thanos (the last one is way too high, it was just to give an idea how much damage Wolverine's claws can do). The damage output of Logan's claws far outshines the damage output of anything Cap brings to the table. Logan has shown himself to be more than capable of getting around the shield, which will be Cap's end.

Not to mention Logan has shown ridiculous accuracy as well. He has stabbed the exact center of a coin using his middle claw, thrown two darts at the same time into the exact centre of a dart board with his back turned to it, use a knife to stab a fly sitting on his hand without getting cut himself, taking out the tail rotors of a helicopter bg throwing a wrech, taking out a plane's engine by throwing a snall sword, tagging a speedster with gunshots, and tagging speed demon with thrown blades.

For his strength, look in the herochat link above

  44. And even if his physical stats other than durability were only "excellent but hardly human perfection like Cap", his durabilty will still allow him to hang in the fight and then stab out or punch out Cap, since out of everything his durability and healing have been most consistent, and Logan needs just few stabs, which he is fast enough to get in, with enough blows even one of human strength can and have KOd Cap, something Wolverine is more than capable of accomplishing. And even if as you said " it's his mutant healing and skeleton/claws that make him tough", you should know that they are all Wolverine needs to drop Cap. (don't you dare say that isn't possible, I can provide 7 or 8 instances of Cap being one-shotted by normal humans, 6 of them fodder)

"""""""" Cap would have to go for a Coup de grâce as soon as possible in fight since a single blow from Wolverine could be fatal and the bastard wont die."""""

And that coup de grace is? Other than bringing in others for help or using extremely powerful weaponry, without plot to help him there is nothing Cap can do to put Wolverine down. For example, pressure points? Logan's healing factor prevents such attacks from working, not to mention he knows them himself and is skilled and fast enough to block those. Use environment against him, Logan is too fast, too strong, too much damage soak and superhuman senses to fall for that? Overload his senses? Tried and failed several times. Not to mentipn Wolverine has some deadly and even alien gear with himself and has also beaten ebemies with planning, traps and prep.

""""""I'd still pick Cap for 7 wins out of 10, mainly due to better tactics"""""

And you are saying he can win against Cap just 3/10? Tactics can get you so much, you have enough power to bring them to fruition too, which Cap doesn't pack enough here.

For the reasons stated above, despite whatever tactics Cap tries to employ, barring oytside interference, I pick Wolverine to win 8 or 9 times out of 10. Well 9 times is a bit too much, but still.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Tl;dr, despite your ignorance, Wolverine is superhuman, so by your logic Cap is nothing to Wolverine and doesn't even come close to him in anything, and ergo, will get stomped by  Wolvie evwry time, which is far fron truth.

  49. I dug this...but the WWII beating (besides Wolverine not really fighting back) would be at a time Logan didn't have Adamantium on his bones. Considering Logan will heal the difference between hitting a 195 pound man and a 300 pound one with metal lacing his bones is big. Good stuff still.

  50. People forget Cap's shield is good offensively and defensively. But Wolverines claws are only good offensively. And snce Cap can use it offensively and defensively at the same time while also being able to throw it at Logan. Cap takes this.

  51. I'm no comic book expert. But if it's Hugh Jackman's wolverine vs MCU Cap, I'll put my money on Cap any day. Cinematic universe wolverine, whilst nearly indestructible, has a major flaw. He often charges with little to no strategy. Being more skillful fighter, Cap could easily use wolverine's claws against himself, as shown in one of the comic books
