THE TOP 25 GREATEST SUPERMAN COVERS OF ALL TIME

THE TOP 25 GREATEST SUPERMAN
COVERS OF ALL TIME

By
John "THE MEGO STRETCH HULK" Cimino

SIMPLY SUPER!
Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster and first appearing in Action Comics #1 (1938), Superman (real name Kal-El) is the last son of the doomed planet Krypton. He was rocketed away as an infant by his father Jor-El who believed that the planet was about to explode. Arriving on Earth, the child was taken in by Jonathan and Martha Kent, who raised him as their own child. As he grew up, he discovered that due to this solar system's yellow sun, he had gained almost unlimited powers, of flight, speed, strength, endurance and enhanced senses. The name "Superman" was given to him by reporter Lois Lane, with whom he would come to love and work with at the Daily Planet in his civilian identity as Clark Kent.

As Superman, the character carries the most respect of any superhero the world has ever known and he has become the standard all others are measured by. He lives by the traditional moral values instilled in him by his foster parents. He is often pictured with a sense of unbounded idealism mixed with restraint provided by his sense of fairness and compassion for others. He is a man with an incredible depth of feeling, often struggling with the differences between the right answer and the practical one. Devoted to promoting "truth, justice, and the American way", Superman has proved over and over that he is a true hero, capable of whatever bravery or self-sacrifice is necessary to right a wrong or save a life. He is above our common human character flaws; he doesn't feel greed, prejudice, resentment or bias.

While he is one of the most popular and powerful superheroes ever created, Superman is without any doubt the most important. Being the archetype superhero character model for all the others, his relevance and entire comic-mythos are without equal. With a career that has spanned almost 80 years within the pages of thousands upon thousands of comics, creating a list of his most memorable covers was by no means an easy task because, let's face it, Superman comics are the standard of superhero comics. His comic book covers have continued to intrigue and influence generation after generation. While all fanboys/experts/fans have their favorite Superman covers, I based my picks and rankings on how memorable they were to me (especially as a kid growing up in the '70s and '80s). When I look at these covers, I see Superman portrayed the way he should be; proud, strong and in the throes of superhero action! Plus, I wasn't too picky about which Superman incarnation was on the cover. You might see Superboy or an alternate-future Superman here and there because they still represent Superman in all his glory to me. Maybe my favorites won't be yours, but you'll still enjoy the 25 that I've selected. So ladies and gentlemen, Super-fanboys and Super-fangirls of all ages get ready for my greatest Superman covers of all time... "This looks like a job for SUPERMAN!!"

  1. That list is missing a ton of great covers:

    - Action 13
    - Action 19
    - Action 20
    - Action 47
    - Action 242
    - Action 252
    - Action 419
    - Action 684
    - Superman 14
    - Superman 24
    - Superman (volume 2) 75

That is just off the top of my head - so not a big fan of that original list - but everyone will have their favorites.

  2. There is a lot here that I don't agree with but with all the classic Superman covers out there it had to be tough putting together only twenty five covers.

That said, I agree with your number one!

  3. The list is pretty good. I'm not sure enough covers were considered, but they picked some memorable ones.

  4. Love the first cover w/Ali becasuse it captures history and is interactive. If you look at the question at the bottom left, it asks if one can spot the celebrities of that time. You can see Stan Lee in there as well as Mad Magazine's icon and Betty Ford, and others who represent that time period. Almost like a time capsule.

    1. Agreed. I love how Alfred E. Neuman was on the cover.

  5. If I were a teacher grading this list, I would write "DO OVER" at the top. The three-paragraph intro, I will say, was really good.

  6. I agreed with a lot, but you need at least one of Gil Kane's amazing covers from his run on Action Comics in the 80s. And I think the really weird covers of the 60s and 70s ("Molten Nab of Steel" springs to mind) are underrepresented.

And in total agreement, "Kryptonite Nevermore" was my first pick when I read the thread title!

  7. I'd have to spend some time looking, but off the top of my head, here are some favorites that weren't on your list:

    Action #61
    Action #85
    Action #101
    Action #252
    Action #847
    Superman #9
    Superman #18
    Superman #23
    Superman #32
    Superman #300
    World's Finest #34

  8. Generally speaking--with few exceptions--I'm not a big fan of the painted cover on a comic book. It's usually too austere and seems to deny the fact that beyond the cover there is a comic book inside. I like comic covers to look like actual comic book art with black line work, dynamic action scenes, captions, dialogue balloons--the works.

One exception to this rule I make are the painted covers on the old Gold Key TARZAN comics--though I admit this is mainly nostalgia. Another exception would be the cover for LIMITED COLLECTORS' EDITION No. C-31 (October-November '74). I was thrilled when this tabloid-sized comic arrived in the mail and I pulled it out of the crush-proof mailer. There on the cover was the painting of Superman by H.J. Ward with colours by Sol Harrison--a reasonable facsimile of the painting that hung in the DC offices for many years dating back to the early '40s.

  9. Superman #1 and Action Comics #1 should have been #1 and #2 on the list. How can you put Superman #1 at position 10?

    1. Those are great historical covers, but the best? No way!

There are so many other Superman covers to choose from. I think this list is pretty good.

  10. I grew up during the late 70's, so my lasting impression on Superman was the "Neal Adams" Superman. But to each their own...

  11. Being a big Superman fan I have a few problems with this list. Saying that, I do like your top five. Those 100 Page Super Spectaculars were great.

    1. Agreed! I love those Super Spectaculars! Neal Adams was on fire at that time. He could do no wrong.
